Events
There’s a lot more to Budapest than just concerts and theatres.
There are many special outdoor events too. For example, at weekends
throughout the summer the famous Chain Bridge is closed to traffic
and given over to shows, displays and markets. The Castle District
hosts a number of special events, none more famous than the Festival
of Folk Arts around the 20th August and the Wine and Champagne
Festival in September. There is a wonderfully evocative traditional
Christmas Market on Vörösmarty Square in the Inner City
from 26th November to Christmas Eve, whilst in front of St. Stephen’s
Basilica in July there is the BudaFest series of outdoor classical
music concerts. The Sziget Festival, on Hajógyári
Island in the middle of August, is known to young people throughout
Europe, and the Petofi Hall in City Park, formerly an exhibition
hall, is another venue drawing huge crowds of young people. The
end of August and the beginning of September sees the annual Jewish
Summer Festival, one of whose main attractions is the excellent
concerts held in the Synagogue on Dohány utca.
